Introduction

My project is on Japanese clothing.

I will tell about men's clothes, women's clothes (Obi, Tabi, Geta) and wedding clothes.

I hope you like my project.

For every day wear, Japanese people wear Western Clothes but they have special clothes from long ago for special occasions.

Men and women both wear kimonos.

Women's Clothing

Japanese women wear kimonos only for special occasions, like New Years, weddings and festivals. A woman's kimono is floor length. Kimonos can have short or long sleeves. Women's kimonos are folded right over left then the left side over the right.

Some kimonos cost a lot of money because they are made of many meters of silk. Silk is very expensive. They have different designs on them, like flowers or family crests. The Japanese put on different designs for the different seasons.

They are not comfortable because they are wrapped tightly around the woman. The woman can only take small steps. It is hard for a lady to bend down or reach up when she is wearing a kimono. Special kimonos are made out of silk.

Winter kimonos are made out of flannel and are called nemakis. Summer kimonos are made out of cotton and are called yukatas.

Men's Clothing

Men only wear kimonos for very special occasions. Mens' kimonos are different colours and darker than women's kimonos. They are short, unlike the women's. Hakamas are very loose or wide-legged pants, worn by men. Kimonos are not worn very often any more by men. They wear happi coats instead. Happi coats are loose jackets. Often they have family crests on them. They are made out of cotton.

OBI

The obi is a long sash tied around a kimono. A man's obi is very plain and a woman's obi is very fancy. It is 10 to 20 centimeters wide and 3 meters long. The obi can be tied many ways; usually at the back. Nowadays fewer people can tie an obi. People can take special lessons to tie an obi. Sometimes a person will come into a family's home to tie an obi for a special occasion.

TABI

Tabis are Japanese-style socks. They are specially made to be worn with getas or zoris. They are made out of cotton or silk. Long ago they were made of leather. On special occasions, men wear black tabis and women wear white tabis.

GETA

Getas are Japanese style wooden clogs(shoes). The bottom part of the geta is wood. Getas are held on to the foot by a cord. The cord or thong goes between the first and second toes. Mens' geta have black thongs. Some women's getas can be lacquered with thongs of silk or velvet. Getas are high off the ground to keep the kimono out of the mud.

WEDDING CLOTHES

For a wedding, A woman wears a fancy colourful silk kimono. The kimono usually has long sleeves. Sometimes the kimono can be five layers thick. A woman wears white tabis. A woman wears a tsuno-kakushi which a stiff white band on her head. Some brides may change to a western style white wedding gown during the wedding. A man wears a kimono and hakama. The kimono has the family crest on it sometimes. A man wears white tabis. He changes to a Western style suit during the wedding.
