Hi, my name is Jacquie and I'm doing my project on the different kinds of transportation. I chose this topic because I thought it would be neat to research. During these chapters I will talk about railways in Japan, defferent types of transportation and also air transportation in Japan. I will also talk about roads in Canada, railways in Canada and also air transportation in Canada. I also thought that it would be really neat to do the comparison with Egypt. The reason why I chose Egypt and Canada is so that you could see the difference. The difference is the transportation in the country we live in and the countrys that we don't live in. I decided that I would do the roads in Egypt, the railways in Egypt and also the air transportation in Egypt. I don't know why anybody didn't choose this topic because it is a very interesting topic. You can learn alot from it, like all the different kinds of transportation and the big difference. Hope you like my project and learn as much as I did and enjoy it. I hope you have fun reading it because I had fun writing it.
In Japan all of the major railroads were nationalized in the year 1907. transportation is important. They were all reorganized and transferred to a private sector in 1987. The railroad tracks in the early 1990's totalled about 23,168 km, that's about 14,397 mi of which about 70 percent was electrified. The construction of a new high speed rail network spanning about 7000 km that would be about 4350 mi and linking principal cities. This started in the 1970's and is due to be finished by the century. Japan has about 1,112,844 km about 619,521 mi of roads of which 5054 km are expressways. The first railway in Japan was completed in 1872, between Tokyo and Yokohama. Most of the railways are of 1,069 mm guage. In the year 1987 the month April the Japanese national railways were organized into 7 private companies. The total length of railways in March 1994 was 27,152 km of which they had only 20,129 km and other private railways has 1023 km. In the year 1993 the Japanese Railway carried 8,906 thousand passengers and 53 tons of freight. An undersea tunnel linking Honshu with Hokkaido was opened to some rail services. There are lots of Metros in Tokyo (2 systems, total about 230 km in 1994, Fukuoka (18 km) there are two or three more that I won't name. There is also tram/light rail networks in nineteen cities. In the beginning of the meiji era in 1968, a national railroad system as Tokyo as its focus. Trunklines link the cities of Japan and an intricate network of lesser lines spreads across the rest of the adjacent regions. The cities most key stations are Tokyo central, Ueno, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku and last but not least Shibuya. Each of them handle 400,000 to 3 million or more passengers each day. An existing trunk of railways have become overburdened, new express railways are being constructed. Today most high speed "bullet" trains are operated between several cities, including Osaka. That is all for Japanese railways.
Now I will talk about the Japanese Aviation. Japan airlines established in 1951, provides service from Tokyo to Europe, United States, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. All of the Nippon Airways is primarily a domestic service which has expanded its international operations in recent years. The worlds first International Airport is Kansai Internations. It was operated on an artificially created island in Osaka Bay in 1994. Tokyo International Airport is located near Tokyo Bay to the south of central city. The new Tokyo Internations Airport was opened for international service. Haneda Airport is now used mostly for domest6ic services. The new Tokyo International is located about 65 km to the east of Tokyo. Japan has lots of modern airports. Tokyo International is sometimes called Haneda. It is the country's busiest airport. It and Osaka International rank among the worlds busiest airports. Most of the foreign air traffic to and from Tokyo arrives at New Tokyo International Airport, which is also called Narita. I think that the names of the airports are very different. That is all for military planesJapanese aviation.
Now I would like to tell you about the shipping in Canada. There are major ports in Vancouver, Prince Rupert and the Fraser River. Costal harbours include Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Campbell River, Powell River, Kitimat, Stewart and also Squamish. The total cargo shipped through the port of Vancouver during 1994 was 67-8 thousand tonnes, from the Port of Prince Rupert 12-9 thousand tonnes. Twenty-one cruise ships with 591,000 passengers visited Vancouver Island in 1994. The British Columbia ferries connect with two places. The first one is Vancouver Island and the second one is the mainland. There is also service provided to other coatal points. Most ships carry an 8-4 average of vehicles. Service by other ferry systems is also provided between Vancouver Island and the USA. The Alaska State Ferries connect Prince Rupert and also with centres in Alaska. Also, I would like to talk a little bit about Aviation in Canada. The first thing are the International Airports located in Vancouver and Victoria provide Interprovincial flights and service all main population centres. Most small public airstrips and private airstrips are located throughout the province. The total amount of passenger arrivals and departures are on scheduled services.
Now I would like to talk about Aviation in Egypt. The first thing I'm going to talk about is that there are international airports at Cairo and Luxor. The National carrier in Egypt is Egypt Air which in 1995operation A300B4-200's. There is lots more that I won't name at this time. Services were also provided by Aeroflo, Air Algerie, Air France, Ukraine, Alitalia, Austrailian Airlines and there are some more that I won't name. 8-96 thousand passengers arrived and departed in 1993-1994 and 107,207 tons of freight were carried. I will also talk about the railways in Egypt. In 1990 there was about an estimate of 4,751 km of state railways of which about 42 km were electrified. In 1992, 828 thousand of passengers and 11-2 thousand tonnes of freight were carried. I'm also going to tell you the population of how many different vehicles were in Egypt. In 1990 there were 30,105 km of highways and 22,690 km of dessert roads. There was 968,000 motor cars in the year 1994 and 399,000 lorries, 371,000 motorcycles and also 37,000 buses. That is all for Egypt.
